Area code 202 serves Washington, DC, in the United States. The 771 area code is an overlay for the same area. An overlay adds another code to the existing coverage area rather than dividing it into separate geographic sections.
The District of Columbia Public Service Commission’s April 2021 dialing announcement describes the 771 addition and the associated change in local dialing. Existing 202 phone numbers did not have to change because of the overlay.

How the 202 and 771 overlay works
Think of the overlay as two area codes sharing the same coverage area. A 202 number and a 771 number can therefore have the same broad numbering geography. You should not treat the choice of code as a way to locate a caller within the District.
For someone maintaining contacts, the useful detail is the complete number. If two contacts have the same last seven digits but different area codes, they are different numbers. Keep the code in the saved entry rather than relying on a shortened local format.
The overlay itself is not a reason to replace a working 202 contact with 771. Confirm a contact’s actual number through the person or organization’s established channel before editing it. Changing the first three digits on your own would create a different destination.
Dialing a 202 number
The regulator’s announcement set October 9, 2021 as the start of mandatory ten-digit dialing for local calls: the area code followed by the seven-digit number. It also stated that the overlay did not turn an existing local call into a long-distance call. Follow your provider’s instructions when a leading 1 is required.
For everyday use, check that saved contacts contain the area code. This matters when an entry was created before the dialing transition or copied from an older address book. Keep any extension in its appropriate place rather than mistaking it for part of the main telephone number.
If a call fails, compare the number with the contact’s current published information. Do not immediately assume the organization has closed or that the number belongs to someone else. An incomplete stored number, a changed contact route, or a service issue needs a different response from a suspicious call.
Does a 202 call mean someone is in Washington, DC?
The area code tells you the numbering area, not a caller’s live location. It does not reveal a street address, establish that the speaker is in the District, or prove that the call came from a federal office.
This is particularly important when the location makes a request seem more convincing. A hypothetical caller might refer to Washington while discussing an official-sounding matter. The relevant question is whether you can verify the organization and the request through an independent contact route. The three-digit prefix does not answer that question.

- Keep any voicemail or stated callback number separate from the displayed incoming number.
